They call me Steven

6 hours of poker and I break even.

Let's just get it out of the way and say I didn't win this week and I was never really in contention. I never gathered up many chips all nite and there weren't any bad beats or monster pots that came my way. A graceful exit with AJ shortstacked that came up against AQ for TJ and I was off to the losers lounge to punch Phil Gordon and take his lunch money.

Who had the chips ? Well, Johnny Calls managed to drag home a fair ammount of chips with his "call everything" and fold if you don't hit strategy.

Johnny and TJ were locked in an ongoing battle that eventually saw TJ exit stage left in his 3rd straight week in 3rd place.

The hand of the night saw Toby down to his last 30 chips with KQ and Cousin BJ decided to go all in with his measley pocket Aces. Like I said, Toby had BJ covered by 3 white chips and when the flop came out with the beautiful Ace of Spades BJ lept into the air and Toby sank into his chair. The dealer dropped the deck and was prepared to start shuffling for the next hand when I remarked that Toby had a straight draw since a 10 was on board and he only needed a Jack to win. So Johnny grabs up the deck, burns a card and turns over a Deuce of Diamonds. At this point BJ is glaring at me wishing I had kept my mouth shut. He seems to know what is coming as he stares at me while I watch the river card fall. JACK !!! The 4 outer hits and BJ leaves stunned.

Toby then proceeds to go on to win the whole tournament and $200. Not since Jack Treetop Strauss has the poker world seen such a turnaround of fortunes.

Thankfully, we had enough people to start a round of Turbo $5 SNGs at the second. Jimbo took down one of them and so did BJ. The last $5 SNG had 8 people in it for a prize of $40. I played like the grinder you all know me to be and I took that one down. I came with two $20's in my pocket and I left with two different ones. Even Steven.

Next Week is the $50 buy in Championship event. Stay Tuned.

PokerDiagram.com and the BBQ collide !!!

It was brief, but memorable but I finally got together with the fine fellows Zog and Henry over at PokerDiagram.com to play in one of their live Podcast tournaments. Here is the results.

The first hand I folded to Zoggys lame "set the tone as table leader" raise of $125 in middle position with A8d. I was then rewared on the second hand with the lovely AA and I figured it was time to make some dough. I fire in a nice 4xBB raise and the Small (Davidje) and BB (willy zz) call. Flop is xxx with two spades. Small blind bets $125 and BB calls. I raise to $500 and the small blind folds. The BB calls.

Turn is a Jack of diamonds. I go all in with my Aces and the BB (willy zz) calls showing Js8s. The river is an 8 and I go down as a 4-1 favorite with all my money in the pot. SUCKED OUT for the world to hear.

Thanks for the invite Zog and Henry. I won't ever play on Pokerroom again I fear. I have had nothing but the worst luck with the site.

The tourney is still rolling. I have lots of time to type from the rail over here. 4 are gone and Zog ( bugatti57c ) is still sitting tight with $2550 in 3rd/4th place. Good luck Zog.

I will listen to the podcast with a bad taste in my mouth but I will certainly listen as usual and I urge you to do the same.

Stare into the Lucky Magic Shirt and fold.....

Well folks. It was predicted by all the top poker writers and it has been the talk of all the Poker Blogs for weeks and it finally happened. I won. That's right. Your friendly neighborhood fishy brought home the bacon Friday night and it was a sweet victory. $200 worth of sweetness to be exact.

We started the night with 15 people which is about average for our game. A few regulars didn't make it. All In didn't have the dough but showed up to hang out and cousin BJ had to work late. The buy-in was the usual $20 for 1000 tourney chips and we had two tables going at the start. Blinds start off at $10-$20 and go up each hour.

The night got off to a rocky start for me as I picked up a pair of fours in early position and limped. A rag rag rag board made me feel ok to bet out against the one remaining player, Uncle Bill, who proceeded to call me down with each bet til the river and then he showed us Ace Ace. This was the first of four times I would run into Rockets this night and survive to tell the tale. So after one hand I am down to just a little over 600 in chips.

Hand number two I catch AKo a hand I have truly learned to hate but I make a raise like I should for $80 and I get 5 nasty callers. The flop has no ace or King and I get out amongst a flurry of betting. I fold for a long while and steal a few pots here and there and before you know it, I am back just above the $1000 original buy-in.

Our table is still full but the other table has lost one of the perennial powerhouses and 5 time winner Jimmy the Man (aka Lucky @$$) and the news of his departure in 15th position delights the whole room. Jimmy took me out with trip nines in the last hand I played two weeks ago as some loyal BBQ fans will remember from my May 8th post. In late position I peer down at a hand that has been good to me lately (9d 10d) and I limp with it. The flop of the night falls. (6,7,8 rainbow) giving me the nuts. It feels good to hold the nuts but you must not squeeze the nuts so I check when my turn comes and the button raises $40 and eveyone calls including me. The Turn is just what I wanted to see, the Ace of Diamonds, which also puts two diamonds on the board giving me a flush draw. This time I bet $80 and get raised by the button and I call. The River is a King of Clubs and I still hold the nuts so I put out a feeler bet of $400 into a pot of about $900. Bosey thinks for a good 30 seconds and calls showing AK. I couldn't beleive he didn't reraise but oh well, I took a big pot and am now among the chip leaders.

I go up and down for the next hour. I call a $200 raise by Sammy who sits directly to my right. I'm not laying down A 10 suited at this table. The flop brings and ace and I am not sure if I like that or not. But I bet $300 at it and Sammy immediately pushes his last $770 into the pot muttering "all in". I quiclky call and he shows Ace Ace. He makes a FH
and doubles up through me. I am left with under the $1000 buy-in again. I vow to fight on.

The blinds move up to $40 and $80 and I've scraped my way back up to around $180 with a series of All In bets that get no callers. Almost everyone limps in our game and only a few people ever seems to raise with any regularity so my All In bets are pulling in over $200 each time before the flop. I decide to sit back awhile and wait on a big hand and one finds me. I hold 44 on the button and I just call the BB. We have 4 players in at this point and the flop brings a ravishing (A 8 4) giving me my first set of the night. Unlucky for TJ's Dad he makes his flush on the river when another 8 falls giving me my only FH of the night. I take over $2000 and now have a formidable stack.

We have now lost anough people that we combine to one table and the action heats up. I make some money with (9,10) when I flop two pair. I gain some real confidence when I lay down (A8) to another $200 raise from Sammy who I bully into showing me yet another Ace Ace. Uncle Bill is the huge chip leader as we color up to Black chips and he has nearly all of them. Bill likes to chase big draws and I used that to my advantage and take all his chips in two hands with cards I can't even remember. Jack sits across from me and has been making several All In bets that I read as bluffs so I call one of them with (99) and he shows (88) and he is gonzo.

We are down to 4.

Bosey, Me, TJ, and Sammy.

Bosey is on the short stack and I put him all in with my suited (J,10h) and he calls with (A7) and he gets his Ace. The very next hand I take him out with a straight I make on the turn and he calls when I put him all in onm the river with his pocket Jacks.

Down to 3 players and only two will be taking home any money. $200 for first and a measley $40 for second. I was under the impressions however that 2nd would be getting $80 but I only found out once I had won what 2nd really paid out. I go to the bathroom and take the picture you see at the top of this post and I tell myself to not do anything dumb until I am in at least 2nd place. I have had a record number of "one out of the money" finshes in the last few months and I am not mentally prepared to handle another one. So I splash my face with water and head back into the smoke filled basement and I fire up a to calm my nerves. I crack a Miller Lite and nestle down.

By now I have well over $12000 in chips and I decide to fold alot and hope the other two will do the work for me. But when I catch (QJc) on the button and TJ raises $400 (as usual) I call. The flop is all bricks so I check and he bets $800. I stare long and hard at him looking for a tell. He smiles. I lay my hand down face up and he shows me pocket kings. A few hands later TJ pushes all in on a board of (22347) and Sammy thinks a few seconds and then calls showing AK. TJ looks stunned and then mucks. TJ, a multiple winner who is by his own admission up over $1000 in this game this year already is gone. It's down to me and Sammy.

Sammy is a quiet player. He raises infrequently and from my little black book, he always has a pair or (AK) when he raises. So my plan is to play conservative, especially since now he has TJs chips in a huge pile in front of him and I fear I may be outchipped. I see (A7) on the first heads up hand an announce "All In". Sammy folds and I take down the blinds which are now at $200 - $400. The very next hand I squeeze out (A4s) and go All In again. Fold. So far so good.

With our stacks both over $10000 we might be here awhile. It is almost midnight and the cards are coming out faster because All In ( Tim ) has been so kind to deal for us.

There are alot of boring hands and folds for about 5-10 hands. I am chatting away with everyone, trying to get Sammy to loosen up a bit and then come the last hand. I don't even remember is I was on the button or not but I remember the rest. I was holding (Kc,7h) and the flop came down (2,2,7). I remarked to TJ that I wish I had "the hammer" and he laughs. Sammy asks what "the Hammer" is and I tell him it's (2,7). He looks at his cards again and looks at the board and says "All In". I call so fast my head spun off and turned over my (K7) and he shrugs and turns over (4s,7s) and hangs hs head. I cringe as the turn and river come slowly as TJ is now dealing and he milks the suspense as if Matt Savage were walking around with a microphone and hadn't given him the nod to flip the last two cards. Finally he peels off (Qc,10d) and I have to look at it for a second before I realize it is actually over. I extend a hand a Sammy shakes it, exclaiming "I never figured you for a Seven in that spot".

We had to count all the chips down to see if I had him covered. It took a few minutes but we found out I covered him by less than $50 in chips out of $15,000.00. Game over.

Next Stop.........Vegas

I forgot to mention, Jimbo took home the cabbage at the 2nd chance table. $80 ain't chump chage. Jimbo is the King of the Bad Beats and he'll be the first to tell ya. Look up BarbiesBoyToy on and try to knock him pout of a $1 SNG. I might even offer a bounty. Jimbo is actually my old man and he once took me out heads up with Ducks against my AK. That's what I get for teaching him how to play I guess.

A hand on the face makes you a great poker player.

Alfredo 'Toto' Leonidas. The Professor Howard Lederer. John D'Agostino. Joe Cassidy.

What do these players have in common ? They all play cards with one hand and they all have make a decent living playing cards. I suppose the secret to success is resting one hand under your chin in some fashion while playing.

What does this accomplish ? Phil Helmuth takes it one step further by putting both hands to his mouth (many wish he would do this 24/7). Maybe that is why he is the only World Champ out of this group. Is is a way to disguise tells ? One less hand to fumble your chips with and give away your pocket aces ? Puffy jackets to hide your heart pounding, sunglasses to hide your lying eyes, and hats of every sort to pimp your Online Poker backers, hide your bald head and shield your twitching face. Will Caro be out with a new book on Poker Fashion any time soon ? I think he is missing the boat.

I was just watching a replay of the 2004 US Poker Championships on my Replay TV again and never noticed how many players had this same quirky habit. Maybe I'll incorporate it into my Friday nite game this week and take home the dough.

On that note, we have set June 10th as our first Championship Tourney with a buy-in of $50. We expect at least 15 people for it and will pay out three places.
My guess is $500 $200 and $50. I can't wait.

a few friends for you to visit.

My pals at PokerDiagram.com invited me to sit down and play in a PokerRoom sit and go tourney today that would be turned into their 3rd Podcast. The time difference between the center of the Universe and the UK is just enough to keep us apart during the weekdays. Perhaps I can sit and play with Zog soon and take him down.

I watched the podcast today. Well, I watched the Sit and Go that will become the podcast anyhow. I won't tell you how it ends and ruin it for you. But I will tell you that Zog again makes the money. My pals on UB say URINE ! As in Urine the money. That's what really matters in tournament poker isn't it ?

Log on and listen to the funny UK accents.

Jimmy.

Final table. Blinds are 200 400. I raise preflop with QQ on the button to 1500. Jimmy flat calls. TJ's dad folds.

Flop.

7 9 9

Jimmy checks. I go all in. He calls. Holding A9. The turn and river offer no poetic justice and my night is over.

My aces lost to his 5 10 off suit when he called a preflop raise of 400 ( blinds were 40 -80 then ) and he make quad fives and I stare at the nut FH.
My other QQ lost to a guy who flops a straight in the BB with 6-4.

All my big hands got beat. Well, I did flop 7777 once but made jack shit with it.

Jimmy. I'm gonna sugar his gas tank next week and I won't have to deal with his lucky ass.

No poker next week, my wife is outta town and I got the 4 year old.

The BBQ rolls on.

SOme UB news. I had 100 Ultimate Points left so I decided to play them. I got in a 100 point SNG and I won it. Some good play as I only held one big pair the whole game ( JJ and I got folded to when I raised with them on the Button )

So I have 5 cents and 514 Ultimate Points left. Damn you UB. Just when I was redy to Uninstall you again.

Peace Out.

The BBQ rolls on...........

Third. And Jimmy is the luckiest man I have ever seen at a card table.

Jimmy.

What can I say about Jimmy. He won, first of all. Did I mention he was just lucky ? I guess some people are. Some have to be unlucky too I suppose. I am not saying that I am unlucky because I really am not. I got to the final table again as usual. I even had decent cards this time at the final table which is a rarity. My I had a big stack of chips to play with and so did two other guys. TJs Dad had about as much as I did &while Jimmy had a little less.

Back to Jimmy. Jimmy gets a big hand and he starts to shake and stand up yelling All In !!!!!!!!! All In !!!!! This is when he usualy has three jacks or a Full House. Everyone knows this. Most folks just fold and he always shows it to everyone. But then there are the other times............

continued tomorrow........

I lied.

I didn't Uninstall UB. But I am finished with Online Poker for a bit. I need a break. I think my wife needs me to take a break too. I am going to use this Blog to talk about poker anyhow. I'll be telling you about my Friday Night homegame instead. I have been playing so much online poker that my heads hurts. My play has went in the shitter and I have been playing for fun and not playing to win. I just don't have the time to dedicate to playing tight since my job is so hectic this time of year. I'll be back. That's for sure. I still have Ultimate Points on Ub to play with ; )

Tonight is my home game. It's 30 miles out into the backwoods of NC. A scary placeif you are not caucasian or even if your name ain't Bubba or Dale for that matter. We play a Texas Holdem Tourney. Sometimes as few as 8 people and sometimes as much as 19 at three tables. I have never won it in the three months I have been going. Lots of seconds and thirds, lots of monster chip stacks given away on bad bluffs. I never seems to get any cards when the final table comes and I am not a very patient man. Tonight is another chance.

With the Buy-in set at a fixed $20 we usually pay out around $200 for first and sometimes $120 or so for 2nd if we have a big crowd. Most times it is just first place getting paid. I think the rules state that I will finish in the first place not paying out : O

Wish me luk. My Poker Bankroll needs it.

I'm not submitting this as a brilliant play on my part, just as an example of how bad the play in the penny Omaha Room can be. If I sat tight in this room all day and only played with nuts, I'd probably make some dough.

So I sat with $1 and left with $5.64, not bad. Since I was playing as I printed out my reports for work. Ok. I have dug myself a hole and I took the first step at climbing out of it. Perhaps the Poker Gods will Throw me an AAAAAAAAAAAAA rope whie tossing around KKKKKKKK to my opponents. I can't remember the last time I took a decent pot with AA. I dread getting it. I feel Like James McManus in Positively 5th Street, sitting on the Button with Rockets and watching everyone fold.

UB bankroll $16.27

Tuesday, May 03, 2005

well well well........

Thanks to a 40 oz'er and a lack of patience I have managed to run the ole stack down in about 45 minutes to just over $11. I played a heads up match for $5 and got killed by a runner runner straight flush when I flopped the nut FH and slowplayed it.

I lost $10 in a cash game with AK soooooted when I made two pair on the flop with a heart draw and went all in. I got called by a guy who hit his trip 3s and I improved no more. Oh well. Perhaps I can go broke tomorrow and end this blog and save my energy. Hmmm.

No. I shall persevere. I still have a chair and more than one chip. Tomorrow I'll take a day and reflect on my poor play and ill temper and regroup. I need a massage.

Piece.....owt.

Monday, May 02, 2005

Three Posts in one day, don't expect this again.

Well, I finished up the night by playing a little penny Omaha ( a game I have no business playing, even for pennies. You have the nuts, you bet and hope fish chase you and dont catch. I tend to win at Omaha if I play smart at the low levels. I sat with $2 and cranked it up to $11. Got down to $1.83 again and then crawled back to $6.14. I also played a little penny holdem and turned 75 cents into $3.24. Maybe it's pennies from here on out. But I'm going to bed on a winning feel so I should sleep well and thanks my lucky stars I am not broke in one day. UB won't get me today ! Hahahah

PS. if you see wbrumfiel21 on UB, be sure to knock him around. He's a major fish. Underline the word fish in your notes.

UB is the worst

I should have known. The bad play on UB combined with the worst random number generation on the net have started off my first day of the experiment at a loss thanks to bad play like this by my opponents.

I knew that Stampeder had AJ. I was hoping he had it. TJ says this is a game of Top Pair and Top Kicker in his book. My overpair of Kings was praying for a flop like this.

But WTF was Googly thinking ? Hey I got top pair with a medium kicker and a possible runner runner straight draw and I am facing two all ins ? Hmm, lets goo all in too.

I don't have the bankroll to move up in limits to aviod this kind of moronic play, but how long can the Bad Beat BBQ continue ?
